In a research experiment conducted in 2006, the results found that even though technology has been improving dramatically in recent years, there is still much work that needs to be done in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of student information systems. Overall, several challenges have been associated with implementing school-wide student information systems. These challenges can be categorized as either structural challenges or technological challenges. Structural challenges exist because the corresponding infrastructure does not support transition from paper-based management tools to computerized management tools. Technological challenges, on the other hand, exist because the technology itself is not advanced enough to provide adequate staff support. With these types of issues in mind, school-wide student information systems are being implemented with growing frequency, yet there are still several key design considerations that must be addressed in order to successfully implement them. Other potential solutions that have been investigated for integrating these systems into school operations include the use of educational technology as a whole as well as various desktop publishing tools. In recent years, educational institutions have been using computer-enhanced instruction as well as instructional technology more often than ever before. As a result of this, there has been a greater push towards the integration of these technologies into the classroom. However, despite this increased use of educational technology by students and teachers alike, many schools still rely on paper-based student information systems (SIS). This is especially true for smaller schools; however, even large universities and colleges still prefer using paper-based systems.
