Gsdx is an open-source video game emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It has support for AMD, Intel and NVIDIA graphics cards as well as being able to use the D3D library from Wine. The project was created in 2002 by Gabest with the goal of being a high quality emulator for use with Square Enix's "Final Fantasy X" as it had been experiencing problems with Dolphin. In October 2018, Gsdx 0.1. 16 was released with support for the Android platform, but was discontinued as a result of Google's ban on emulators. It has been discontinued as of August 2016, due to lack of interest from its main developer and to Gsdx being "obsolete". Another reason is that the successor project Hgssx which uses a DirectX 11 wrapper called "Hgx" instead of DirectX 9 for rendering, does not support previous operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Vista. However, Gabest has stated that it is open for anybody who wants to continue development of the emulator. Until its discontinuation, Gsdx was available in three different variants. The main difference between these is their compatibility with different games; 'GC' is for the Nintendo GameCube and Wii, 'SC' for the Sony PlayStation 2 and 'DC' for the Nintendo Wii (not to be confused with DC from Dragon Quest). There are also older versions of Gsdx with no suffixes, which support older hardware or provide more limited performance. These are not actively developed any longer. Gsdx is an open-source emulator that is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2. It was initially released in 2002 and the source code has been in a state of development since then. It is written in C++ with emulated software accelerated by a software rendering layer that renders to the screen buffer itself. For speed reasons, this layer does not support certain image formats such as PNG or JPEG, but instead renders to TrueColor visuals which require less resources when upscaling to the window. In addition, Gsdx attempts to emulate OpenGL pipeline state when possible by detecting when an application is being run from a console and taking its input from the console's X Window System instead of a keyboard and mouse. When it is not possible to emulate the pipelines, Gsdx will simply use similar X11 buffers. Gsdx is built on top of DirectX 9 and uses DX9's visual interface protocol. A language barrier exists between the C++ and DirectX APIs, causing various bugs in Gsdx to occur. Since version 0.5, Gsdx attempts to minimize this problem by making the environmental variables and some features of DirectInput and DirectSound available in DX9. GSDX has three different types of graphics cards supported: the AMD Radeon series, the NVIDIA GeForce series and both Intel and AMD CPUs.
